[4] Obituary Martha Ellen Campbell Stewart, 84 of Gastonia, NC, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024 surrounded by her loving family.
Our “Martha Stewart” was a dedicated wife of 62 years to the late Jim Stewart of Burlington, NC. She was the mother of three sons and Mimi to five grandchildren.
Martha graduated from Ashley High School in Gastonia, NC. She was a proud member of the Class of 1958. She attended X-ray training school at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, but quickly decided that interior design was her passion. She received her interior design certification from Gaston College where she spent many years at Lighting Inc., Belk Store Services, Hart’s Desire and Morris & Daughter Fabrics of Gastonia, NC. She was extremely talented in her decorating abilities including remodeling many Belk stores with color and carpet choices, interior designing and layout and display placements. She so enjoyed decorating and helping others that she worked every Saturday at Hart’s Desire for many years to assist any customer in Gastonia with decorating their own homes. She was a member of her local bridge club where she had more fun just being with her best friends than playing bridge. She was thrilled when it was her turn to host bridge club at her home. Martha also enjoyed long walks on the beach at Wild Dunes, SC where she and Jim spent many years together during their retirement.
After marrying Jim at First United Methodist Church of Gastonia in 1961, she became an active member of the church where she sang in the choir for many years. She led the FUMC Women’s Circle, and received a lifetime membership pin in the United Women in Faith Organization. She and Jim were very active members including serving dinner every Wednesday evening to the members and serving the homeless at The Salvation Army.
Martha never met a stranger. She loved everyone she met and you always knew how much she loved you because she would say it over and over. She had a giggle like no one else and when she got tickled it was just fun to watch her love life and her contagious smile. She loved her family and friends fiercely. Her dearest friends, Ann Hall of Gastonia, NC and Juda Reinhardt of Columbia, SC will always be cherished friends to Martha and her family. She loved her Tar Heels and looked beautiful in her Carolina blue outfits!
Martha is survived by her three sons, Keith and wife Heather of Charlotte, NC, Kevin and wife Susan of Gastonia, NC and Stacy and wife Kelly of Clayton, Georgia; She leaves behind five grandchildren: James Stewart, Matthew Stewart, Anna Grace Stewart, Sydney Stewart, and Braden Stewart. She is also survived by her sister Doris Beatty, her niece Robin Warren and husband Ronnie as well as her nephew Greg Sand and wife Sara.
Martha is preceded in death by her husband James Herman Stewart who she was married to for 62 years and now they will spend eternity together. She is also preceded in death by her loving father Ernest Campbell and her precious, sweet mother Myrtle Elmore Campbell, all from Gastonia, NC.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm to 2:45 pm on Friday, July 26, 2024 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia on New Hope Road followed by a 3:00 pm service in the Chapel at McLeans. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 pm at Gaston Memorial Park near the Singing Tower right beside her loving “Jimmy Stewart.”
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Bereavement Fund as they have been most serving to this community and Jim and Martha’s family during these difficult few months. However, if you so desire to send flowers, her favorite colors to decorate with were blue and white.
The family would like to say a special thank you to her cousin Eddie Campbell and wife Ann who graciously helped to take care of Martha for the past several months along with the entire staff and especially the nurses at Peak Resources of Gastonia for your love, patience, and care of our precious Martha.
As Martha would always say, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” God blessed her beyond measure with family, friends and a church that loved her to the end. Her legacy lives on in all the lives she touched.
