    Biography Gladys Pauline Edmonds was born on October 20, 1915, in Surry County, North Carolina to Frank Thomas Edmonds and Mary Lela Edmonds. On the 1920 Census she was 5 years old and lived with her parents and siblings in Dobson, Surry County. On the 1930 Census she was 14 years old and lived with her parents and siblings in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She had attended school and was able to read and write. She was married on September 1, 1933, to Elton Lee Stewart in Alamance County, North Carolina. Elton was born on August 4, 1910, in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, to William Stewart and Viola Alma (Ellisor) Stewart. On the 1940 Census Gladys was living with her husband and children (also her mother-in-law and two siblings-in-law) in Burlington, Alamance County. On the 1950 Census she was living with her husband and children in Burlington. Elton passed away on March 21, 1992, in Mebane, Alamance County. Gladys passed away on October 10, 2004, in Burlington. Both were buried in Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington.

    Obituary Mrs. Gladys Edmonds Stewart, 88, of White Oak Manor, formerly of 314 Spence St., died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at White Oak Manor after several years of declining health and two weeks critical. A native of Surry County, she was the wife of the late Elton Lee Stewart, and the daughter of the late Frank Thomas Edmonds and Lela Doby Edmonds. She was retired from Copland Fabrics Inc. and was a charter member of Front Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where she was a deacon emeritus, former church historian, former Sunday school teacher and nursery attendant, and was a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Survivors include two sons, Mr. Frank Douglas Stewart and wife, Bessie, of Burlington and Mr. J. Herman Stewart and wife, Martha, of Gastonia; a brother, Mr. Rufus Edmonds and wife, Isabel, of Paradise, Calif.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Margie E. Coe; and four brothers, J. Herman Edmonds, Gurnie Edmonds, Floyd Edmonds and Hal Edmonds. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004 at Pine Hill Cemetery by Dr. Dace Lewis, and Dr. Preston Parsons. The family will receive friends at the cemetery 30 minutes prior to the service, and at other times at the residence. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Front Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) by Dr. Dace Lewis, and Dr. Preston Parsons. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Building and Development Fund of Front Street Christian Church, 609 Atwater St., Burlington, N.C. 27215. Rich and Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
