    • On the 1830 Census, his birth range is 1781-1790. On the 1840 Census, his birth range is 1790-1799. On the 1850 Census Mortality Schedule, his estimated age in 1849 was 79, making his birth year 1770. Genetic research suggests (but has not proven) that he has the same mother as Alsey, meaning he was born before 1784.

    Biography John(#12) Doby was born around 1780 in Wake County, NC to John(#5) Doby and a Native American woman. He married Bina Johnson in 1805 in Rowan County, NC. They had eight known children: William(#16) Doby, Allen Doby, William Hinton Doby, Joseph Doby, Sarah "Sally" Doby, Margaret Doby, Lewis Doby, and Mary "Polly" Doby.

    On the 1830 and 1840 Census he was living in Davidson County, NC.

    It's not known when Bina died, but on his probate documents, dated 1849, his wife, Alsey (not to be confused with his brother, Alsey) stated that they had been married about 8 or 9 years.

    He passed away in June 1849. His burial location is not known.

    A note about John’s children - For the 25+ years the author has been researching the Doby family, there has been confusion about the children of John and his brother Alsey. There are no records that specifically show father/child relationships. Recently two records have become available online that have solved the mystery.
