Biography John Doby (#9) was the son of John (#1) and probably Elizabeth Strong. The first confirmed mention of John is in his father's will in Virginia in 1717. His birthdate is unknown but he was probably at least 18 years old when his father's will was written. His parents were probably married around 1675 and he was probably born within a few years of that. There are no marriage records for him, but in his will, he lists his wife, Ann (maiden name unknown).

There are even fewer records for John than for his father. In 1704, John Doby is listed in the Quit Rents (tax), with 300 acres in James City County, and 500 acres in Prince George County. One or both entries may refer to his father.

John signed his last will and testament on July 3, 1735, in which he stated, “…To my wife, Ann, all the plantation and land where I dwell – containing 533 acres with houses, etc. for her life. At her decease to my two sons, Peter Doby and Robert Doby, to be equally divided. To my wife, I give an entry of 200 acres of same which I have in the county of Prince George during the term of her life, at her decease I devise it to my two sons, Peter and Robert Doby. To my wife, I give all my slaves, goods, chattels, personal estate, etc. and make her my executor.” The will was proved on June 15, 1737, in Surry County, Virginia.
