On the 1930 Census, he lived with his parents and siblings in Tunstall Township, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
On the 1940 Census, he lived with his parents and siblings in Clarksville Township, Davie County, NC. He registered for the World War II Draft on June 30, 1942, in Mocksville, Davie County. On October 1, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy in Raleigh, Wake County, NC. He was stationed onboard the USS California (BB-44) during its repair and eventual return to service in January 1944. During the war he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged from the Navy on January 27, 1946. He was married to Virginia Sue Gaither on August 15, 1948, in Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina. Virginia was born on March 28, 1931, in Davie County, NC, to James Bird Gaither and Eula Jane Nichols. On the 1950 Census, Ralph and Virginia lived in Turneresburg Township, Iredell County, NC. Ralph died on April 10, 1993, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Virginia passed away on April 3, 2018, also in Winston-Salem. Both were buried in Westlawn Gardens Of Memory Cemetery, Clemmons, Forsyth County, NC.

[2, 5, 9, 14] Obituary 11 Apr 1993 Mr. Ralph Dan Doby, 70, of 4719 Southwin Dr., died Saturday, April 10, 1993 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital. He was born May 31, 1922 in Surry County to Walter Henry and Ollie Parker Doby. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was aboard the Battleship California. He received the Purple Heart while serving in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Parks Chevrolet and was of the Baptist Faith. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Gaither Doby of the home; two daughters, Ms. Jane Davis of Winston-Salem and Mrs. David (Danita) Flippin of Lewisville; two sons, Joe (JoAnne) Doby of Mocksville, and David (Linda) Doby of Lewisville; four granddaughters, and one grandson; five sisters, Mrs. Christine Cobb of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Marie Elmore of Statesville, Mrs. Dot Crosson of Statesville, Mrs. Shirley Chatman of Statesville, and Mrs. Carolyn Taylor of Statesville; three brothers, J.D. Doby of Winston-Salem, Perry Doby of Harmony, N.C. and Garnett Doby of Cleveland, N.C. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel by Rev. Cecil Hill. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum. The family will meet with friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
