    Biography Mettie was born around 1815 in Wake County, NC to Alsey Doby and Mary "Polly" (Sneed) Doby. Sometime between 1819 and 1830, the family relocated to Davidson County, NC. She was married in 1832 to John Henley in Davidson County. They had nine known children.

    On the 1850 Census, they lived in Rowan County, NC. John is not listed on the 1860 Census, so it's likely that he passed away sometime between the birth of their youngest child, around 1858, and the 1860 Census.

    Mettie was living in Staly County, NC on the 1860 Census followed by Troy, Montgomery County, NC on the 1870 Census, then back to Stanly County for the 1880 Census. There are no records for her after the 1880 Census.

    On her son Pinkney's death certificate her last name is listed as McCormick, indicating that she had remarried before her death.
