Name John Doby Nickname John #5 Birth 17 Jul 1750 Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia, British Colonial America [1]
Christening 13 Aug 1750 Albemarle Parish, Surry County, Virginia, British Colonial America [1]
Gender Male Biography John(#5) was born on July 17, 1750, in Albemarle Parish, Surry (now Sussex) County, VA, to Peter Doby and Mary (Clifton) Doby.
He was likely married to a Native American woman. In 1907, twelve of his great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren applied to the Cherokee Nation stating that their great-grandmother/great-great-grandmother was "Indian". Their application was rejected for lack of proof. If she was Native American, she was probably from a tribe local to where he lived in Surry County, VA, rather than from the Cherokee. Additionally, they probably weren't married as it was illegal at the time.
Sometime before 1778 John relocated to Wake County, NC where he volunteered for the Militia. He served about twelve months before being drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Revolutionary War under Colonel Kenan and Major Taylor who marched on Charleston, SC. He was captured by the British when they took Charleston.
It's not known what happened to his first wife. It's possible that she died during childbirth. Berry was born around 1784 and John married Sarah White in 1784 in Wake County, NC.
After the war, he lived in Wake County for approximately 20 years before moving to Spartanburg, SC. On the 1810 Census, he was living in Rutherford County, NC, which is adjacent to Spartanburg County. It's not known exactly when he relocated to Georgia, but his oldest child with Sarah, William(#8) was married in Georgia in 1828 and John was listed on the 1830 Census in Jasper County, GA.
In 1833 he applied for a Revolutionary War pension.
