    Biography John was born around 1809 in Wake County, NC to Alsey Doby and Mary "Polly" (Sneed) Doby. Sometime between 1819 and 1830, the family relocated to Davidson County, NC. He married Sarah "Sally" Smith, daughter of Edmund Smith and Lucy (Varner) Smith, in 1831. They had ten known children.

    On the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census, he was living in Davidson County and was a farmer.

    His exact death date is unknown. He died without a will, but court documents were signed by his children on 22 Apr 1881 assigning William Badgett to make an inventory of John's possessions.
