Name Charles Robert "Charlie" Doby [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] Birth 22 Aug 1915 Surry County, North Carolina, USA [3, 5]
Gender Male Biography CHARLES ROBERT "CHARLIE"3 DOBY, (Robert Lee2 DOBY, William Pinkney1 DOBY) was born on August 22, 1915, in Crutchfield, Surry County, North Carolina. The North Carolina Birth Index lists his birth date as 22 Aug 1915. The World War II Draft Registration and the California Death Index list his birthdate as 19 Aug 1915. Charles enlisted in the United States Army on February 9, 1942, at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) in North Carolina. In December 1943, he was admitted to a military hospital for “disease of the ear.” His death and burial dates and locations are not known. There is a death record for a Charles Doby in 1975 in Los Angeles, California, however, Charlie was still living in the 1980s. He married CLARA ADELLE SNIPES, who went by Adelle, daughter of JACK JOHN SNIPES and CLARA WORKMAN, on September 13, 1947, in Guilford County, North Carolina. She was born on June 13, 1917, in Alamance County, North Carolina. She died on January 24, 2016, in Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina and was buried on January 27, 2016, in Haw River, Alamance County, North Carolina (Phillips Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery).
In 1949 or 1950 (before the census), Charlie disappeared, never to be seen by his children again. The information that the family has about his disappearance centers around his relationship with his mother-in-law, Clara, who lived with him and Adelle. For a while, Charlie lived with his brother, Carlie Lee Doby in Cameron, Moore County, North Carolina. One day, with no explanation, he walked off the front porch, down the road, and got on a bus. It was many years before the family knew where he was, and every time they would locate him, he would move, telling the family not to try to find him or contact him. In the 1980s, he was living in Florida and ran into his nephew, Grady Lee Doby, in a Miami hospital. They talked, but Charlie did not maintain contact with the family. He is listed in the obituaries of his parents and some siblings, placing him in Texas in 1951, Phoenix in 1960, back in Texas in 1966, and Mebane, NC in 1971. The family may not have really known where he was so this information may not be fully accurate.
