    Biography Richard Clarence Doby was born on January 19, 1912, in Surry County, North Carolina, to William "Billie" Thomas Doby and Maude Lee Fulk. He lived with his parents in Dobson Township, Surry County until his marriage to Lillian Lynch on March 9, 1935, at the courthouse in Dobson. Lillian was born on January 31, 1913, in Stokes County, NC, to Drewry “Drew” William Lynch and Martha Elizabeth “Sissy” Martin. On the 1940 Census he was living with Lillian and his son in the Rock Creek Township of Guilford County, NC, south of highway U.S. 70. They lived next door to his brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Bessie Doby. Their likely place of residence was on Judge Adams Road, north of Little Alamance Creek and south of Interstate 40/85. He registered for the World War II draft on October 16, 1940, in Whitsett, Guilford County, NC. He lived in Whitsett, was 6 feet tall, weighed 165 pounds, had brown hair, blue eyes, and a "ruddy" complexion. He was employed by Rock Creek Dairy. In 1941, the family was living on Loy Street in Burlington, Alamance County, NC, and Clarence was employed as a dyer at Burlington Dyeing and Finishing Company. In 1948, the family was living on Long Street in Burlington, NC and Clarence was employed as a mechanic at R&S Motor. On the 1950 Census, he, Lillian, and their children lived on Friendship Road in Friendship Township, Guilford County, NC. He was working on a dairy farm. He passed away on March 1, 1985, at Alamance County Hospital in Burlington. Lillian passed away on February 2, 2007, in Graham, Alamance County. Both were buried in Alamance Memorial Park in Burlington.

    Richard Clarence Doby, 72, of 407 Moser St. died Friday morning in Alamance County Hospital. He was a retired farmer and was a native of Surry County. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in McClure Funeral Home in Graham by the Rev. Bennie Smith. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Lynch Doby; two sons, Richard E. Doby of Burlington and James C. Doby of Haw River; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Edwards of Burlington and Mrs. Beulah Andrews of Whitsett; five brothers, Marley Doby of Alamance, Cletus Doby of McLeansville, Claude Doby of Burlington, Floyd Doby of Greensville, S.C., and Troy Doby of Whitsett; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 p.m. today and other times at the home.
