On the 1920-1940 Census Reports, he lived with his parents and siblings in Dobson Township, Surry County. He enlisted in the United States Army on October 1, 1942, at Camp Croft, South Carolina and served during World War II. He was wounded during battle from artillery shell fragments and admitted to a hospital in December 1944, and discharged from the hospital in January 1945. He was discharged from the Army on October 26, 1945. His final rank was SSGT. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star. His total length of service was 2 years and 5 months. He was married to Lela Heartie Lawrence on July 7, 1945, Dobson. Lela was born on December 9, 1921, in Mount Airy, Surry County, to Martin Luther Lawrence and Matilda Pearl (Shinault) Lawrence. Curvie away on October 23, 1963, in Mount Airy. Lela passed away on March 30, 2006, in Dobson. Both were buried in New Home Church of Christ Cemetery in Dobson. [2, 4, 8, 9] Obituary 24 Oct 1963 Curvie Ray Doby, 47, of Dobson, Rt. 2, the New Home section, died unexpectedly at 8 a.m. yesterday at his home. He was born in Surry County to C.E. and Etta Badgett Doby. He was a farmer and a veteran of World War II. He was a deacon at New Home Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lela Lawrence Doby; a son, Ricky Brint Doby of the home; a daughter, Miss Patty June Doby of the home; his parents of Dobson, Rt. 2; and three brothers, Alonzo, Jacky and George Doby, all of Dobson, Rt. 2; and four sisters, Mrs. Howard Matthews of East Bend, Mrs. Clifton Atkins of Dobson, Rt. 2, Mrs. Bruce Corder of Mount Airy and Mrs. Floyd Cutter of Ararat, Va. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at New Home Church of Christ by E.L. Headen and John Dillon. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
