    Biography James Elmer Doby was born on March 22, 1904, in Surry County, NC, to Robert Lee Doby and Nancy Regina (Holyfield) Doby. On the 1910 and 1920 Census report, he was living with his parents in the Rockford Township of Surry County. He was married on September 30, 1926, in Rockingham County, NC, to Florence Gammon. Florence was born on May 30, 1910, in Rockingham County, to Walter Shepard Gammon and Dessie (Strader) Gammon. On the 1930, 1940, and 1950 Census report, they were living in Pittsylvania County, VA. Florence passed away in September 1977, in Danville, VA. James passed away on February 20, 1980, in Danville. Both were buried at Danville Memorial Gardens.
