    Biography Perry William Hemmings was born on August 2, 1915, in Surry County, North Carolina, to John Franklin Hemmings and Mallie P (Doby) Hemmings. On the 1920 Census, he lived with his parents and siblings in Dobson Township, Surry County. On the 1930 and 1940 Census, lived with his parents and siblings in Bethania Township, Forsyth County, NC. He registered for the World War II Draft on October 16, 1940, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County. He was married to Mattie Ruth Nance on August 31, 1943, in Winston-Salem. Mattie was born on September 1, 1925, in Winston-Salem, to Richard Guy Nance Sr. and Sarah Viola (Scott) Nance. On the 1950 Census, Perry and Mattie lived in Salem Township, Forsyth County. Perry and Mattie were divorced in December 1964 in Volusia County, Florida. He remarried to Melba Faylene Hicks in June 1967 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County. Mattie passed away on August 12, 1996, in Brevard County, Florida, and was buried in Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. Perry passed away on September 24, 2001, at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, and was buried in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, Forsyth County. Melba passed away on January 21, 2016, in Rural Hall, and was also buried in Crestview Memorial Park.

    Mr. Perry William Hemmings, 86, of Old Hollow Road died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Hemmings was born Aug. 2, 1915, in Surry Count the son of the late John Franklin and Mallie Doby Hemmings. He was a faithful and longtime member of Matthews Chapel Church of Christ and a former elder at Ardmore Church of Christ. During World War II he worked in Norfolk, Va., shipyards. Mr. Hemmings retired from the Forsyth County Youth Center and had also been a Forsyth County deputy. He was a member of the N.C. Government Employees Association. He loved gospel music, hunting, motorcycles and water skiing. Mr. Hemmings was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman and J.D. Hemmings. He is survived by his wife, Melba Hemmings of the home; two daughters, Nancy Owens (Richard) and Thea Rae Sine (Butch) of Cocoa Beach, Fla., a son, Lanny Hemmings (Janie) of Lubbock, Texas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Opel Hale of Yadkinville and Lawana Huffman of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Clinton Hemmings of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Matthews Chapel Church of Christ with Ron Exline and Lanny Hemmings officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Chapel Rural Hall.
