    Biography William Pinkney Doby was born on April 28, 1854, in Davidson County, NC, to Thomas William Doby and Edith (Winkler) Doby. Sometime before the 1860 Census, the family relocated to Old Town in Grayson County, VA where he remained until his marriage. He was married to Martha Gentry on August 31, 1875, in Bryan Township, Surry County, NC. Martha was born on February 19, 1858, in Surry County, NC to Jonathan Gentry and Elizabeth (Brannock) Gentry. William and Martha lived in Surry County their entire lives, first in Franklin Township, then, by 1900, they were living in Dobson Township, where they remained until their death. William passed away on September 11, 1938 and Martha passed away on April 23, 1949. Both died in Surry County and were buried at the New Home Church of Christ Cemetery in Dobson.

    Obituary Mr. William T.[sic] Doby, aged resident of Surry County, passed away at his home on Sept 11, making his stay on earth 76 years. He had been a victim of bad health for several years following a stroke of paralysis. He united to the New Home Christian church in 1904 and lived a consistent and loyal member since the organization being Elder and officer in the church. He was married to Martha Gentry in 1874 and to this union nine children were born, six boys and three girls. He is survived by his wife and seven children. Mrs. H. L. Parker of Rockford, Mrs. Lela Edwards of Danville, Va., Mamie, William and Richard Doby of Rockford, Walter Doby of Burlington, and Robert Doby of Danville, Va. Also 63 grandchildren 18 great-grandchildren and several brothers and sisters and a host of friends who unite with the family to mourn his loss. Funeral services were held from the New Home Christian church Friday, Sept. 12 at one o’clock with Rev W. R. Coaley of Virginia officiating and interment took place in the historic cemetery nearby.
