On the 1930 and 1940 Census, he lived with his parents and siblings in Bethania Township, Forsyth County, NC. He registered for the World War II Draft on October 16, 1940, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on October 24, 1942, at Camp Croft, Spartanburg, South Carolina and served during World War II. He was discharged on February 6, 1946, at Fort Bragg, Moore County, North Carolina. Before the 1950 Census, he was married to Martha Elizabeth Hatcher. Martha was born on August 27, 1913, in Pilot Mountain, Surry County, to George Mosby Hatcher and Nannie Eliza (Hill) Hatcher. Martha passed away on January 18, 1996, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Herman passed away on 1 Jun 2000 at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Both were buried in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, Forsyth County.

[10] Obituary Mr. Herman Richard Hemmings died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Hemmings was born July 19, 1912, in Surry County to John Franklin and Mallie Doby Hemmings. He was a member of Matthews Church of Christ, an active Mason of Lodge 167 Winston-Salem, and supported the Oxford Orphanage. Mr. Hemmings retired from R.J. Reynolds with 40 years of service. His wife, Martha Elizabeth Hatcher Hemmings, preceded him in death; also a brother, John D. Hemmings. Surviving are a son, Richard L. Hemmings of Clemmons; a grandchild, Graham Hemmings of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Clinton Hemmings and Harry Hemmings both of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Opal Hemmings of Yadkinville and Lewana Huffman of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
