    Biography Josie Dorothy Doby was born on September 14, 1923, in Dobson, Surry County, North Carolina, to Charles Edgar “Manny” Doby and Mary Etta (Badgett) Doby. On the 1930 and 1940 Census Reports, she was living with her parents and siblings in Dobson Township. She was married on November 27, 1943, to Clifton Joseph Atkins in Mount Airy, Surry County, NC. Clifton was born on April 21, 1922, in Surry County, to Joseph McKinley Atkins and Lillie Mae Frances (Corder) Atkins. Clifton passed away on April 21, 1922, in Surry County. Josie passed away on September 22, 1999, in Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, NC. Both were buried in New Home Church of Christ Cemetery in Dobson.

    Mrs. Josie Dorothy Doby Atkins, age 76, of Route 2, Box 88, Dobson, widow of Clifton Atkins, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 1999 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Atkins was born in Surry County on September 14, 1923, the daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Mary Etta Badgett Doby. She was a home maker and a member of the New Home Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Jeanette and Brent Simpson of Ararat, and Frankie Butcher of Dobson; six grandchildren, Rodney Simpson of Ararat, Kevin Simpson of Elkin, Monica Simpson of Ararat, and Heather Norman, Adam Butcher, and Joseph Butcher, all of Dobson; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Simpson and Kyle Simpson, both of Ararat; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Jessie Matthews of East Ben, Edna Corder of Mount Airy, and Grace and Floyd Culler of Dobson; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Freeda Doby and George and Bertie Doby, all of Dobson. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Atkins was preceded in death by two brothers, Alonza Doby and Curvie Doby. The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 24, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by Bro. John Snow and Bro. Robert Parish, with burial in the New Home Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.
